Algae - Green water causes and solution II
In the first part of this article we discussed causes of green water and forms in which algae exist in water gardens. This article will be discussing more about each forms and possible precautions and solutions.
Free-swimming algae are the most common form of algae. They are individually minute, and produce a total effect that makes the pool look as if it is filled with thick green pea soup.
The blanketweed forms are the type that makes tangle masses of long silky threads, if they are not remove in time they can be a shocking nuisance.
Free filamentous forms grow strands that make a short furry growths on lilly stems and the sides of the pool.
Another, which forms floating brown scummy blobs, occurs less frequently. Algae are an unsightly nuisance rather than a menace. But it’s not much consolation to know that fish are perfectly happy swimming around in the pea soup if it is so thick that you can’t see whether there are any fish in the pool or not.
Despites it’s existence in several shapes, algae don’t really have much harm if any at all to your pool. You don’t really have to panic. That is how things are at the beginning. Everything is usually and always in favour of the algae and they duly appear and fill the pool. If you ignore it, and provided the pool is well designed and properly stocked with plants, it will go away.
Some of the precautions you need to take are as follows:
Make sure that the pool is well designed as this has a profound effect on it’s liability to suffer from the green water nuisance.
The pool has to be well stocked with necessary plants. The growth of the plants will reduce surface area exposed to sunlight..
Planting adequate oxygenating plants will help in reducing algae and possibly remove green water faster. The oxygenating plants will consume most of the mineral salts available in the pool that aids algae growth. Also the foliage of the water lilies and floating plants will deprive them of light. So as a result of this they will vanish and overnight you will have clear water in your pool.
When you notice a growth of algae in your water don’t be tempted to change the pond water as that will eventually leads to algae production and green water in the new pond within days.
