Water Garden plants and aggressive fish – possible solutions

Plants and fish are two basic pond inhabitants. They co-exist inside the pool with nutrients from the plants flowing to the fish and vice versa. Submerged oxygenated plants clean the water for the vulnerable fish, protecting it from infections.

If you have large aggressive fish in your pond there is a possibility they will reduce the lifespan of the plants in the pond or remove the plant altogether. Lots of pond owners are experiencing something like this and when it happens there is need to protect the plants from large aggressive fish. Complete separation of fish from plants may not have good effects on your pond or fish.

Submerged oxygenated plants can be protected with submerged plant protector which you can get from home and garden stores close to you. The submerged net has a floating hoop at the top and a weighted bottom. You will insert the plant through the net opening and close a drawstring around the plant to get the submerged plant contained completely.

You can also use a floating island net to protect floating plants from large fish. The floating island consists of a black cloth mesh that is supported by a floating ring at the top and closed by a drawstring at the bottom. The drawstring can be closed completely for floating plants, or can be closed around a pot rim to keep fish away from water lilies while allowing unimpeded growth.
